Leviathan , Traveller: Over the border in Spaceships & Vehicles

The mission and ship design for a merchant cruiser seems applicable to Star*Drive technical assumptions, in fact on a smaller scale, similar to how I've speculated (and I think some history of the Verge systems implies) the stellar nations would explore, or have explored open space.

The station at Berengaria, at the edge of an unclaimed region of space (edit: an interspiral region of possibly, though not drastically, reduced stellar density) might match to Hammer's Star or one of the other borders of stellar nation territory. The rival employers might be corporations, as listed, or representatives of particular stellar nations - Rigunmor versus StarMech might fit.

The Zhodani are probably, in broad terms, a set of Externals.

The scenario mentions at least one other ship type, lancers favoured by a local polity as a distinct small craft class, with implications for size and typical systems to serve a strategic intention.

The adventure recommends characters who are experienced officers with a broad range of skills up to ranks 2 and 3, which I've suggested will convert to Alternity at or above the highest rank available to starting characters, but without copious equipment or funds.

I'm particularly interested in the way the adventure extends and particularises ship encounters, noted as one of the referee's main tools, along with personal qualities of the ship's crew.

Another that's not too familiar to me is a naval "specialised detection vessel". There's not a lot of further detail and in fact the author may have contemplated various possible designs.

edit: "The Leviathan's sister vessels in IGS service" would most naturally be called something like survey cruisers, as on page 23 of the original.

If they are, in fact, some division of the Theocracy, their typical patrol assets might be in the range of classes from The Externals that I've speculated elsewhere may match to the campaign setting's "Klick Attack Ship".

On the whole I might get a fair amount of reuse from my Legacy of War effort for this.

The "modified" ship encounter procedure is actually considerably different in structure to Book 2. For the circumstances of each main-world, the system determines
  • chance of encountering a ship, modified by the presence or otherwise and quality of any spaceport,
  • whether the encounter is a trader or (broadly speaking) military, including Scouts and the afore-mentioned lancers,
  • allegiance of the ship, made interesting in several locations by the likelihood of overlaps of different nations' patrols, though not at the same time.
This explicitly includes the prospect, interesting in above context, of Zhodani Traders. Conditions in the sector, unlike class C and worse Imperial ports, don't seem to offer much of a living to pirates, but Free Traders are a distinct type.

The Leviathan class is bigger and has a larger crew than a Kinunir, which although called a battlecruiser, is a pretty lightweight example. (But the adventure makes clear that when a Merchant Cruiser incurs the ill intent of an actual warship, the former will very quickly and definitively lose.) edit: A Medium Transport hull sounds right and will help support multiple sub-craft.

The Merchant Cruiser's multi-purpose launch tubes and magazines are an important design feature, its gun turrets not so relevant.

A Heavy Medium Transport hull sounds right and will help support multiple sub-craft.

The biggest of these is a bit more than 5% of the Leviathan's hull size, so might be a variant of the System Liner described in the Alternity PHB. The next is about half the size - following a theme, based on a STG Shuttle - two more half that size - Launch hulls, an air/raft that elsewhere I've matched pretty well to an Alternity skycar, and last but not least, personnel capsules, which are small lifepods (at least as designed) narrow enough to fire out the launch tubes. I might have more than one use for a previous effort to describe space vehicles smaller than ships.
