As I mentioned elsewhere, the Arms and Equipment Guide includes at the beginning some useful-looking description of everyday life, work and society in Star*Drive (with some wretched OCR, if I can mention it):

Author
By 2501, few people need to work in agriculture and industry to support the starfaring societies of the day. Most workers find employment in information, leisure, entertainment, trade, and service industries. This isn't enough to keep everyone on the overpopulated worlds of Old Space gainfully employed. Unemployment runs at 10 to 50 percent in the heartworlds of the Stellar Ring, leaving large populations of disenfranchised citizens in even the most prosperous stellar nations.

Out in the frontier worlds, there are still continents to tame and industries to build, and almost anyone can find work. Most young colonies haven't had the time to develop leisure industries, so a far greater percentage of the population is involved in serious industrial or agricultural work.

In the worlds of Old Space, people who can't or won't find work can lose themselves in a society that stretches across a star system. Culture and learning flourish under the care of millions of well-educated (but jobless) dilettantes. In some places, people dedicate themselves to academic pursuits, creating fulfilling careers as amateur scientists or artists despite the lack of employment opportunities. In other places, the restless masses scream for ever more violent and spectacular entertainment...

While I wouldn't read this to say that everyone on the frontier does find work and is diligent and honest - I distinctly remember using the words "human flotsam" for some whose particular brand of fecklessness can only develop without the well-meaning botheration of civilisation - it does sound as if the careers of free spirits, misfits or plain layabouts would take different forms across the many worlds.

What might be some memorable and gameable unique individuals, personal interests and ways of getting by that players might encounter? How might they impose on the party's intentions?

Careers in the Campaign Setting that might grow out of leisure, lawlessness or the impracticality of full-time paid employment:

Author
Brawler Ruffians, thugs, street fighters and low-quality "muscle" .. Some brawlers fight for hard-won purses in a variety of illegal street and station matches, while others might hone their combat skills simply by surviving in the worst ghettoes of overcrowded cities or fortress ships (!)

Martial Artist True aesthetics (?) might live in poverty and squalor or roam the Verge as homeless vagabonds

Soldier / Military Officer / Naval Officer .. a significant number of officers and enlisted personnel now pursue their nation's defense as detached soldiers

Spacehand At the end of their term, they'll take their meager savings to the nearest bar and spend their hard-won money in one long binge - only to drag themselves down again to the docking ports when they sober up

Clergy In the absence of any higher direction, these clergymen carried on with their missions of evangelisation and ministry to the poor and unfortunate, learning to rely on their own judgement

Entertainer .. there are many talented individuals who have the charisma and drive to accomplish one-man shows

Stellar Noble .. Still others are simply bored dilettantes looking for thrills

Swindler Many swindlers describe themselves as "independent businessmen." In truth, many are just con men and cheats who travel from system to system before word of their deeds spread

Corsair It's a brutal and ruthless lifestyle lived among the very dregs of human and alienkind

Explorer / Guide / Scout

Gambler .. very few gamblers have a connection or allegiance to anyone

Outlaw A marked man in every system

Smuggler .. creatures of opportunity, awaiting the chance to haul illegal or restricted goods for more profit than regular cargo can offer

Thief

Gridpilot Most gridpilots .. vigorously defend their right to work for whomever they please

Doctor .. there are plenty of unscrupulous professionals who renege on their obligation and disappear, seeking employment in places where no-one asks questions about medical degrees or credit history

Independent Pilot Independent pilots charter their vessels to any merchant, smuggler or fugitive who can meet their price

Scholar / Scientist

Biokineticist Biokineticists are often loners who feel constrained by the narrow, scientific views of the medical community. The same impulse to help others in pain often drives biokineticists to become champions of the poor and weak

Biowarrior The biowarrior believes that the ultimate test of a warrior's heart is the battle she must fight armed with nothing but the weapons given her by Nature

ESPion Unscrupulous ESPions sell their servies to various criminal organisations

Mystic Feared and revered by the general populace

I'm interested, as the title might suggest, in Traveller's Drifter and Rogue careers, originally
Author
Other: Characters who do not serve in one of the above areas instead follow unproductive careers with a variety of experiences. The Other service covers some trades, ne'er-do-wells, and the shady realm of the underworld.

later with branches of Barbarian, Wanderer, Scavenger, Thief, Enforcer, Pirate and various others over the development of the game.

Supplement 4 describes Rogues and several other relevant careers.

"All rogues should be regarded as initially untrustworthy, and should be treated with suspicion."

Freelance Grid reporters have been important to the setting.

There's lots of character generation advice around for barbarians in a setting of higher technology they don't fully understand, or for post-apocalyptic survivors, such as: Psionic Wasteland Character Creation (and maybe use Party Status as well, for the first session.)

A couple of generators, interestingly subtitled as potential hirelings:

Pitiable Orphans
Dastardly Dandies (see some of the Stellar Nations art)

edit: For Eclipse Phase, which might be about equally dissonant: Rimwalkers
