The "Glass Door" in Tangents shows an example of incidents involving parallel timelines or hyper-geometric phenomena appearing on distant planets, in ages of interstellar (or sometimes, Solar system) travel. I've mentioned a few others from time to time and of course it's a notable theme of several popular settings, such as (and maybe starting with) Star Trek.
There's some risk of losing focus and urgency when these events shift an already-foreign setting (it helps when the setting and characters have been well established in earlier storylines) or when more capable technology reduces the risk of out-tangent threats, or makes it seem it will be easy to reverse temporal changes using the invention of the week.
