The GMG has a couple different methods of tracking the finances of your campaign. Personally I would prefer to wing it, but, coming from Pathfinder and D&D my players want to track every penny. They are already unhappy about the lack of hard currency in the Star Drive setting.
But, what works for you?

Most games, I ignore it. They have enough money for standard/average purchases, and need to make a note if they're saving up for that quantum minigun. If the game features a lot of resource management (free traders, say), well, then we bother with all of that stuff.
Pretty much what Guardian said.
Also, you can use hard currency in S*D. I've used "bricks" of rhodium before, and it is noted in the setting that rhodium has been used as a backup currency.

I posted a document
with some help from Call of Cthulhu
to deal with savings in a modern game. I've started thinking
a bit about how this might change in a Star*Drive campaign: substantially, but not completely, I suspect.
